Derek’s tips for driving in winter:
- Clear the car of snow and ice thoroughly; it’s not only safer for you and fellow road users but you will also avoid a hefty fine and points on your licence!
- Wear dry, comfortable shoes to have more grip on the pedals.
- Stopping distances are ten times longer in snowy and icy conditions.
- Keep an ice scraper, de-icer, hot flask & food, blanket, charged mobile phone, torch and snow shovel in the car.
- Stay on the main roads as much as possible. These are more likely to be gritted and patrolled by the police.
Derek’s tips for driving more economically:
- Don’t drive with underinflated tyres.
- Don’t drive with bald tyres!
- Slow down a bit; driving at high speed will increase fuel consumption.
- Close your windows and turn on the fans instead.
- Use the right gear.
- Drive smoothly.
- If you REALLY want to save fuel: walk….!
